Baltimore was in the forefront of the Civil
Rights Movement during its formative years. It was the home of such
greats as Clarence Mitchell, Jr., the "51st Senator" who shepherded
the key Civil Rights legislation of the 1960's through Congress, and
Thurgood Marshall, the NAACP lawyer who led the way to key legal victories
in landmark cases like Brown vs. Board of Education and who later
became the first African American Supreme Court Justice. Lesser-known but
equally prominent leaders included:
 | Rev. William Alexander, one of the co-founders of the National NAACP,
and founder of the Southern Life Insurance Co. |
 | Rev. Edmund Meade, prominent member of the Baltimore Branch and plaintiff in
a landmark housing discrimination case |
 | Lillie
Carroll Jackson Mitchell, Clarence's wife and long-time President of the
Baltimore Branch |
 | Clarence and Lillie's
daughter
Juanita, the first African American woman admitted to the bar in Maryland |
 | Parren

from Maryland |
