The Autobiography of Malcolm X, written in 1965, was Haley's first big success as a writer.  This copy contains the following inscription to Haley's secretary:  "To Diane - whom as a secretary I genuinely don't know what I'd do without, and whom, as my friend, is reciprocally both true and close!  Much love, Alex."
