The Free Summer Excursion Society was founded in 1871 by John T. Ford, the theatrical manager for #FordsTheater in Baltimore and the infamous #FordsTheatre in #WashingtonDC where #AbrahamLincoln was assassinated.

The goal of the excursion society was to provide countryside trips to mothers and children in Baltimore. Certain Thursdays were designated solely for Black mothers and children.

The steamer F.C. Latrobe departed from the Recreation Pier and went to #Chesterwood, a 16 acre park in #DundalkMaryland with swimming pools and picnic pavilions.
